Our Company St-Luc: the name
St-Luc: the name

The name St-Luc is derived from St Luke, patron saint of printers.

Luke was the author of one of the gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. He was born a Syrian in Antioch and was a physician by trade. As a student of the Apostles, he preached the Good News together with St Paul in many towns.

According to legend, Luke also painted Mary. Various representations of the Madonna are also venerated as being the work of St Luke.

Because he was the author of one of the gospels, he was appointed patron saint of all occupations involving writing and/or books – writers, notaries, book dealers, printers, book-binders, paper-makers, etc. This also provides the link to the name of our printing company.

But we’re not alone, for many hospitals bear the name of St Luke (Belgium’s ziekenhuis Sint-Lucas, for one). St Luke’s profession also ensured he was patron saint of doctors, surgeons, pharmacists and all careers focussing on healing. The tradition that he painted Mary has also made him the patron saint of artists, sculptors and other practitioners of the visual arts.
